Selection cellar Maison des Millésimes Paris
Stéphane Montez worked for two years in different vineyards around the world, England, Australia, California and South Africa. His international experience now allows him to improve the techniques of the family estate and to face certain climatic difficulties.
This adventure abroad says Stéphane made me aware of the unique character of our terroir, this privilege naturally brings to my wines a beautiful balance.
Since the seventeenth century, the Monteillet estate belongs to the Villard family whose most famous representative is Louis Hector, Duke of Villard, Marshal of France louis XIV ( winebnb.com ).
Patiently, gradually, the ancestors of Stéphane Montez, winegrowers, sailors, coopers, animated by the love of the Rhône and the work of the vine, buy plot by plot the land of the estate.
A notarial deed of 1741 shows us Michel "master carpenter on the Rhône and cooper" ancestor of Stéphane Montez, buy a vineyard in Monteillet. His descendants, after the Revolution, continued their acquisitions.
Today Stéphane Montez succeeds his father Antoine, who passed on all his know-how to him.
Thus the Montez plant, vinify, raise and market their wines, on 48 hectares and five appellations.
It is in these hillsides organized in terraces supported by dry stone walls called "chaillées" that the vine flourishes and is formed thanks to its privileged South/South-East exposure.
The Chaillées were built 2000 years ago by the Romans.
The terroir of the vineyards of St Joseph Nord, Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu are located on the slopes of the right bank of the Rhône.
The terraces of the estate are located on the eastern outskirts of Mont Pilat (1434 m above sea level) which protects them from bad weather (the Domaine du Monteillet records one of the lowest annual rainfall in the region). They overlook the Rhone Valley continuously bringing a pure and light breeze sanitizing the bays.
The Combe du Montelier flowing into the Rhone corridor regularly creates a fresh ventilation, preserving the aromatic purity of the wines and limiting the diseases of the vine.
In addition to the know-how passed on by previous generations, the technique of thermoregulation, robotic pigeage, destemming, vibrating table sorting and pneumatic press were added.
These winemaking techniques highlight the qualities of the terroir and the grape varieties.
