Description

The history of the domain begins with a family of wine-growers who had been living in Saint-Emilion and Pomerol for several generations, and developed their know-how borne of a passion for quality wine. Later in 1993, Jean-Pierre and Sabine Clauzel took over the Château La Grave Figeac, a truly remarkable domain in an ideal location. Their son, Laurent, took over the reins in 1996 and now manages all the technical aspects of the vineyard and wine cellars with an overarching objective in mind: to showcase the unique terroir.

In 2005, through their shared enthusiasm for good-looking, fine wines, friendship and family ties, Laurent and his wife Caroline, childhood sweethearts who met at school, embarked on their own adventure. Since then, proud of their profession and their domain, the couple have worked to produce an unpretentious wine that reflects their values and echoes their respect for the incredible qualities of the plentiful soil where the wine began its journey. They feel strongly about these values and their ambition is to convey them in the wine they produce.

At the Château La Grave Figeac, nature has toiled patiently to create soil particularly favourable to wine-growing. The terroir is composed of sandy/gravelly soil with a firm, stony subsoil rich in iron-oxide and has three essential qualities:

-It is warm and therefore encourages the grapes to ripen early.
-It has a porous structure, so rainwater drains off well.
-It does not hold water and so the vines have to grow deep roots.
At full maturity and an average age of 45 years, the vine population comprises 65% Merlot, smooth and well-rounded, and 35% Cabernet Franc, which gives the wine structure and sophistication. The vineyard is renewed by replacing any vine stocks that have died off during the year. This process is called racotage.

Caroline and Laurent CLAUZEL have chosen to work in this way and everything is done to make sure that the vineyards are tended to with the utmost care and respect, because the potential quality of a wine begins in the soil where the vines take root. Each vine stock is nurtured to improve the quality of the grapes by desuckering (removing unwanted buds) and shoot thinning. The grapes are harvested by hand, one grape variety at a time and plot by plot, then sorted by hand on tables to select only the highest quality grapes.
The Clauzel’s values are also found in the vinification process done without using sulphur, which allows the wine to express its full potential.
The wines are matured in oak barrels for 11 to 15 months and tasted on a regular basis to check their development, then sent to vats to be assembled and fined by adding egg whites. Finally, the wine is bottled.
In 2009, the domain began the transition to organic wine-growing. The first organic wine- label was produced in 2012.
