Description

The estate is currently managed by Guillaume Clusel, Gilbert Clusel and Brigitte Roch.
It has 20 ha of vines on the three historic crus of Lyonnais, Ampuis (AOC Côte-Rôtie, AOC Côtes-du-Rhône and Vin de France), Condrieu (AOC Condrieu), Millery (AOC Coteau du Lyonnais).

From the 50s to the 80s, René and Joséphine Clusel cultivated, like many ampuisais farmers, vegetables, fruit trees, and vineyards of Côte-Rôtie, whose wine they marketed in bottles. At that time the wines of Côte-Rôtie did not enjoy their current reputation, but the Côte-Rôtie of René Clusel was appreciated by connoisseurs.

Despite the lack of notoriety of the vineyard, his son Gilbert Clusel bets on the future of the Côte-Rôtie. As soon as he finished his studies in 1980, he joined the family estate, then began to clear and redevelop old abandoned vines. Indeed the vineyard of Côte-Rôtie, very prosperous from antiquity to the beginning of the 20th century had been almost abandoned since the First World War, and many hillsides were covered with broom, shrubs and even oaks growing through the old walls. When René Clusel retired, the estate had three and a half hectares of vines. It was at this time that fruit and vegetable production was abandoned. It was also at this time that the vineyard of the Grandes-Places, planted in 1935 by Baptiste and Marguerite Clusel, René's parents, saw its production bottled separately and that the estate took the name of "Clusel-Roch", because of the association of Gilbert Clusel and his wife Brigitte Roch.

The 90s still saw many changes: planting of mass selections, from the vineyard of the Grandes Places, resumption of ploughing, cessation of chemical treatments, construction of a new modern and functional cellar that allows a gravity incubation.

These challenges naturally led to the certification of Côte-Rôtie vines in organic farming during the 2000s, as well as to the resumption of grafting to the estate.

As the years passed, a new generation joined the estate: Guillaume Clusel, Gilbert and Brigitte's son, has been working in the family vineyards since 2009. He now assumes all the responsibility of the estate, supported by a passionate team. In 2009, he introduced the third appellation of Lyonnais, the AOC des Coteaux du Lyonnais, by renting vines in the communes of Millery and Grigny, which are like the whole estate, grown in organic farming. In 2014 he decided to create a structure of wine merchant to compensate for the bad years and open up to other appellations. He collaborates with winemakers in whom he has every confidence, and who are also certified organic. In 2021, Gilbert and Brigitte retire, and only occasionally participate in the life of the estate.

Our Côte Rôtie vineyards are located in the north of the appellation, on a terroir of ferrous micaschists. The rock is flush, the ground is about fifty centimeters thick. However, the roots of the vine have such strength that they penetrate into the rock and descend several meters. In these depths, they draw all the elements that, by nourishing the Syrah, make the Côte Rôtie a unique wine...

Our Côte-Rôtie have been cultivated in Organic Farming since the end of the 90s (official conversion since 2002).
