Description

The Domaine de Montcalmes is located 30 kilometres north-west of Montpellier. It takes its name from the small village of Montcalmes, located on the plateau of the same name, overlooking the Hérault valley. Initially, the family estate had 30 hectares of vines, all vinified in cooperative cellars. In 1998, Frédéric Pourtalié and his father Jean-Marie decided to create a private wine cellar. The first red wine was made in 1999, when only 5,000 bottles were produced. The Montcalmes estate covers 22 hectares, managed by Frédéric Pourtalié and his sister Muriel, in the Terrasses du Larzac and Coteaux du Languedoc, and produces about 50,000 bottles of wine per year.
The vines are located in the communes of Puéchabon and Aniane. In Puéchabon, we have Syrah and Grenache planted on the limestone plateau exposed to the north of the lake, while in the town of Aniane, we have Mourvèdre exposed to the south and northwest on the vine. The vines of Domaine Montcalmes are planted in a traditional way, including short pruning, ploughing and green harvesting, but yields are lower. In 2012, the Languedoc estate began its conversion to organic farming, and in 2015 all products were certified organic. For the Puechabon cellars, the maceration lasts about 30 days depending on the vintage. An exclusive breed of pigeon of three grape varieties. One, two or three wines are aged for 24 months in oak barrels. The three grape varieties are blended two months before bottling.
