At the Domaine de la Croix Mélier, winemakers Philippe and Dominique IVANCIC are managing, in the last year of conversion to organic farming, a vineyard of twelve hectares nestled on the left bank of the Loire, between Tours and Amboise, in Montlouis-sur-Loire.
We vinify and age the wines at the estate where we welcome you all year round to share the richness of our terroir and the pleasure of wine.
Here, the king of grape varieties is Chenin, established from the 4th century . It gives the wine its exceptional aromatic complexity. The clay-siliceous soil rests on a tufa subsoil.
The Domaine de la Croix Mélier offers a range of white, rosé and red wines in the Montlouis-sur-Loire and Touraine appellations.
Our vines are planted on soils composed, on the surface, of clay, sand and flint. But what makes our terroir special is the Tuffeau, also called chalk or Turonian limestone, in which the roots of the Chenin lie. Tuffeau, accessible at a variable depth depending on the sector, transmits finesse and strength of character to our wines. This set allows our vines to make the most of the heat of the sun, stored during the day and released at night by the flints. The subsoil perfectly regulates the supply of water and minerals, preventing our vines from suffering from water stress and favoring the balance of the plant. Perfect conditions for the production of great white Chenin wines.
Located high on the slopes overlooking the Loire, and gently sloping towards the Cher, our vines benefit from a microclimate of oceanic influence allowing good over-maturity of the grapes with sometimes the presence of botrytis (noble rot), essential in the production of soft and syrupy Montlouis.
In the vineyard, we are constantly thinking about the balance between good yields and wild life.
The search for a high degree of biodiversity, living soils, preservation and respect for natural resources guides us every day.
The observation of our terroir and the plant is the basis of our work. They are the center of our concerns. So we work our soils either manually or mechanically, bring them manure from a nearby farm, do not use insecticides, pesticides or any other unnatural substance.
