Description

For about an hour, it offers the walker a route of about twenty stages, from the Cooler, through the Sensory Trail of discovery of the vine, to the remains of the medieval fortress, at the top of the hill. Alleys shaded by old lime trees, Theater of greenery, bowling, cave, sheepfold, gazebo, views of the Revermont and Bresse, play of shadow and light ..., here everything invites to daydreaming, sitting on a bench to contemplate the landscape.

Classified as a Historic Monument, it is one of the few French parks that have preserved the visible traces of the terraces and groves created in the 18th century in the heart of a medieval site. Its maintenance and permanent restoration are guided by the study of the original plan of 1774, preserved in the castle.

This route ends with the Jardin des Jeux, mixing flowers, fruits and vegetables by depicting a giant croquet game, table and garden games. Created in 1996 on the site of an old rose garden, this garden has been classified as a Remarkable Garden for a few years.

It was in 1773 that Elisabeth-Pauline de Gand, Countess of Lauraguais, Princess of Isenghien, heiress to the medieval fortress, transformed Arlay into a vast domain in 10 years of work, shortly before being guillotined at the Revolution. In 1825, his grandson, Prince Pierre d'Arenberg took over the property, revitalized the vineyard and called on the best craftsmen to decorate a house found empty. Auguste and Ernest d'Arenberg followed, then in 1915 his brother-in-law the Marquis de Vogüé, and his heirs until today, the Laguiche family. See less
