Description

We are practically the only owners of this beautiful set of preserved land in the North East of the Gigondas appellation, surrounded by 200 hectares of scrubland and holm oaks. Our estate, located in hillsides mainly exposed North-North West, extends over 130 hectares in the heart of the Massif des Dentelles de Montmirail to which are added 7 hectares of old vineyards at the foot of the village. In area, the estate represents more than 10% of the appellation; it is the first private vineyard in Gigondas.
The north -north-west exposure of the hillsides avoids excessive sunshine in the middle of summer and allows a perfect ventilation of the vines (especially by the Mistral, which blows along the axis of the Rhone valley).

The vineyards rise in hillsides from La Machotte and are between 260 m and 500 m above sea level: the plots of Romane and Pas de l'Aigle are among the highest of the Gigondas appellation. The altitude is at the origin of a slow and later maturation of our grapes, and brings freshness and finesse to our wines.

today The 3rd generation takes over In 1989, Pierre Jr (Jean-Pierre's son) took over the family torch, after studying agricultural engineering in Paris, followed by a viti-oeno specialization in Montpellier. He shares with Jean-Marie the delicate task of making wines. Pierre's desire is to look for finesse, length and freshness "à la bourguignonne" in our wines. Thanks to a careful parcel selection, he set up a new winemaking unit which today makes it possible to develop 3 cuvées of Gigondas – Domaine Grand Romane, Romane-Machotte and Le Pas de L'Aigle – which each express in their own way this exceptional terroir. This combination of grape varieties and the Mediterranean climate with the freshness and finesse of altitude gives generous, elegant and well-balanced wines, long in the mouth. Passionate about wine, Claude's children have naturally joined the estate: Henri-Claude heads the sales department. After graduate studies in commerce, he successfully created his signal services business, which he managed for six years. In 2010, he began his return to the world of wine and went abroad to join the chappellet family's adventure in Napa Valley (USA). He made winemaking there, then devoted himself for a year to wine tourism, retail sales and finally to the distribution network. Jean-Marie joined the estate in 2015. An agricultural engineer and oenologist by training, he accompanies Pierre in the cellar for the management of winemaking and blending. After a few months spent with our fellow winemakers Delas in the Northern Rhone Valley and Chappellet in Napa Valley, the desire to join the family adventure was felt! Since 2018, Marie has returned to Gigondas. After graduating from purpan's agricultural engineering school in Toulouse, she worked for some time at Crédit Agricole in the heart of Champagne. She takes care of the private clientele and the cellar. 2019 90 years of history for our family of passionate winemakers We continue to constantly improve our know-how and infrastructure. We inaugurated at the beginning of 2019 our new breeding cellar. Built of natural stones, it can accommodate 75 rooms of 225 liters and 21 lightning of 30 and 50 hectolitres. We also expanded our cellar in 2014 with the construction of a building dedicated to labeling and order preparation. In July 2019, we bought domaine les Hautes Cances in Cairanne. This young name is particularly close to our hearts; we are linked to it with the cuvée Les Hautes Rives since 2014. The vineyard consists of 18.6 ha distributed in Cru Cairanne (12.5 ha), Côtes du Rhône Villages (4.9 ha) and PGI (1.2 ha). See less
