Description

LODGE HILL VINEYARD
The first time Jim Barry walked the Lodge Hill floors in 1977, he knew it was a special site. It now produces two of Jim Barry's most famous wines: Lodge Hill Riesling and Lodge Hill Shiraz.

At 480 meters above sea level, the Lodge Hill vineyard, located on the eastern ranges of Canton Clare, is one of the highest points in the valley. Jim's original intention was to dedicate the entire Lodge Hill vineyard to premium Riesling. However, as he pottered with his trusty shovel, digging here and there, he discovered a very different soil profile on the small slope facing north. Warmer than the rest of the property, Jim decided this was the perfect place to plant Shiraz. So, in essence, there are two vineyards in one.

The soil in the Shiraz vineyard is roughly 40 to 50 centimeters of rich, chocolatey potting soil on rock, made up of almost vertical leaves. The cracks between the leaves have been filled with soil, allowing passage for the vine's roots and free drainage - the perfect environment for low-yielding Shiraz vines.

The soil in the Riesling vineyard on the other side of the ridge is brown loam over a layer of clay and slate that is around 900 million years old and has cracked just off the vertical so that the water can flow freely through. This is a soil that adequately nourishes the vines, but causes them to struggle a bit, making it suitable for growing intensely flavored and finely structured Rieslings.

We will be delighted to welcome you for a presentation of our vineyard.
We will explain the work done in the vineyard, then the work done in the vinification and finally the aging of the wines.
Finally, we will offer you a tasting of some of our vintages.
We look forward to welcoming you very soon!

The late Jim Barry was a pioneer of the Australian wine industry. He was the first qualified winemaker to work in the Clare Valley of South Australia and with his wife, Nancy, built a successful wine business which has produced trophy-winning wines since its establishment in 1959. Today, the company is headed by Jim’s second son Peter, who took over from his father as Managing Director. JIM BARRY IS ONE SUCH NAME. It was Jim Barry’s drive and community spirit that helped shape South Australia’s Clare Valley as a benchmark producer of world class Riesling and cemented its place as one of Australia’s premier wine regions. Jim Barry Wines has a strong lineage. Jim himself was the first qualified winemaker in the Clare Valley, graduating with the 17th Degree in Oenology from the famous Roseworthy Agricultural College in 1947. Working for 22 years as winemaker at the Clarevale Co-operative, Jim Barry became a pioneer of Australian table wine. He then went on to establish Taylors Wines in 1969 for the Taylor family. Wife, Nancy, proved a driving force in the formation of Jim Barry Wines and sons, Peter, Mark & John were involved in the company’s rise. Peter Barry became managing director in 1985. Today Peter’s children Tom, Sam and Olivia work for Jim Barry Wines as winemaker, commercial manager and brand ambassador respectively. Current custodian’s, Peter & Sue Barry, are deeply proud that Jim Barry Wines is still family owned, with three generations of Roseworthy graduates. The Barry family name is synonymous with the Clare wine region and their deep ties to the local community continue to this day. See less
