BODEGAS DE JUMILLA AND ITS WINES Largo is the romance of Jumilla and its inhabitants with jumilla wines. History scholars say that the roots of this intense relationship date back many years before the Romanization of the Iberian Peninsula. This is how the countless archaeological remains and utensils found in the area would prove it. These utensils date back to the Spain of the Iberians who, who knows if under the influence of the Phoenician merchants, began to develop an intense activity in the cultivation of the vine and olive trees that persists even today. They are the very foundation of our Mediterranean culture. But to understand the reason for the abundance of vineyards in Jumilla, it is necessary to take a leap in time, reaching the 19th century. In this country with cold and dry winters and extremely hot summers, each house made its own wines. Made from a variety very resistant to bad weather and the absence of rain, known as «monastrell». At Bodegas Bleda, we still maintain one of the huge presses that were used in these legendary homemade elaborations. And it seems our Jumillano ancestors were good enough to make wine. To such an extent that some intelligent people devoted themselves to it and ended up opening an important sales channel with France for must and wine. The last chance would come with phylloxera. It has wreaked havoc on the entire European continent, including the Iberian Peninsula. This has not affected the vines in the Jumilla region. Because in its sandy soils, the pest does not develop. This triggered an intense wine-growing activity in the region, and these days the origin of many vineyards of Jumilla , among which Bodegas Bleda. THE CAVES OF JUMILLA Most family businesses have become aware of the great potential offered by their particular terroir. They began to take an interest in the technological development of the elaborations. The 20th century has already begun, and as a result of this interest in improving the quality of Jumilla wines, in 1910 the Jumilla Wine Station was founded. It was born with the aim of advising on the techniques of cultivation of the vine, in the elaboration of the wines and to conduct research for the improvement of the vines. The origin of Bodegas Bleda dates back to the very first years of the 20th century. Fruit of the union by the family ties of some of these small vineyards of Jumilla . Aware of the benefits of the fruits of this beautiful land. They conceived with effort and dedication the current wine scene in the region. See less
