Visit Chateau Maucaillou: from grape varieties to blending

The splendid Château Maucaillou was built in 1875, located in front of its Médocan cellars from the Société des Entrepôts de Moulis which then aimed to sell médoc wines to the trade. The result is a strange and daring architectural mix that seems to marry several styles with an overabundance of décor, which wants to evoke both the Renaissance, the middle and the end of the seventeenth century. This construction is an excellent example of the eclectic architecture that flourished in the Médoc at the end of the nineteenth century.

Maucaillou means "bad pebbles", in the sense understood by farmers in the Middle Ages, because this kind of gravelly plot of land was unsuitable for any cereal crop. Subsequently, we realized that these rumps of quaternary alluvium were a favorite terroir on which are born today among the greatest wines in the world!

The estate is now made up of 72ha AOC Moulis in Médoc and 18ha AOC Haut Médoc with a grape variety of about 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot.

With the workshop formula "from grape varieties to blending" you immerse yourself in a unique experience in Médoc during which you can discover the specificities of each of our grape varieties, through three experiences.

In the sandstone of a walk on our vineyard plots accompanied by our dedicated guides, go to meet our three grape varieties.

Then back to the barrel cellar, identify each of them through the tasting of the three mono-grape varieties that you will then assemble to your liking to create your cuvée.

Then take up the challenge of recognizing which of these three grape varieties makes up the chocolate made up especially for your tasting.
