Description

Montirius is the contraction of the first names of the three children of Christine and Eric Saurel:

MON (Manon) – TI (Justine) – RIUS (Marius).

It is a family estate on the side of Eric Saurel for 5 generations.

Gradually, we have evolved towards Bio-Dynamie

In 1980, Max Saurel, Eric's father, stopped using chemical fertilizers, sensing their negative effects on his soils.
In 1986, after a BTS Viti-oeno obtained in Bordeaux, Eric moved with Christine, his wife on the family farm.
In 1987, the couple definitively abandoned chemical weeding on the row for tillage.
In 1989, following health problems at the birth of Justine (their eldest daughter) Eric and Christine successfully discovered homeopathy. This will lead to significant changes on their privacy in the way they care, feed and think. This personal questioning led them to take a different look at their work in the vineyard and to change the way they approach their profession.
In 1990, they completely eliminated chemical pesticides to use only Bacillus Thuringiensis that respect flora, fauna and man.
In 1996, through their meeting with François Bouchet (winemaker in Bio-Dynamie for 50 years), they fully converted their vineyard to Bio-Dynamie certified by Ecocert SAS and Biodyvin.
In 1999, their wines are then made from grapes of bio-dynamic agriculture. The estate is certified Organic by Ecocert and Bio-Dynamics by Biodyvin.
In 2012, Ecocert certifies that our 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 vintages fully meet the European criteria of the new winemaking specifications for obtaining organic wine instead of wine from organic grapes.

Gradually we evolved towards the particular cellar

In 1947, Eric's maternal grandfather, Paul Seignour, returned his estate to the cooperative winery of Vacqueyras as a founding member.
In 1947, Eric's paternal grandfather, Gaston Saurel, vinified his estate in a private cellar.
In 1980, Max Saurel joined the estate of his wife and father-in-law and left the private family winery.
In 2001, Christine and Eric Saurel built their own cellar.
In 2002, the first vintage of the couple was born.
In 2011, Justine Saurel moved to the estate with her parents after her BTS in oenology winemaking in alternation obtained in 2009, her marketing license of Suze la Rousse wine obtained in 2010, a 3-month internship (commerce) in Montreal (Quebec), a 6-month internship (winemaking) in New Zealand.
In 2012, Manon Saurel began a BTS alternating international trade. The practice is carried out on the family estate.
We would be delighted to welcome you to make you discover the estate and its history and the work done to develop our wine!

Looking forward to seeing you again

Our estate extends over 63 hectares including 38 plots on the appellations A.O.C. Vacqueyras, A.O.C. Gigondas and A.O.C. Côtes-du-Rhône, south of the Rhone Valley. MONTIRIUS A.O.C. VACQUEYRAS Red 24 hectares planted with old vines whose average age is 60 years. They are located all around the village of Vacqueyras on the Plateau des Garrigues. The vines rest on garrigues soil and underground on blue clay marls. The grape varieties are Grenache (70%) and Syrah (30%). 120518_montirius_dsc_2864 120716-montirius_301 120716–montirius_218 Aa MONTIRIUS "Le Clos" A.O.C. VACQUEYRAS Red 1-view The unique plot of 8.5 hectares of vines is located at the beginning of the Garrigues plateau. It rises above the plain of Comtat, with on all sides on its slopes, 11 ha of centuries-old oak woods that protect and isolate it from the rest of the appellation. There is a micro climate and a special atmosphere where rainfall is lower than elsewhere. The vines were planted by Christine and Eric Saurel in 1989. The soil is composed on the surface of a garrigues soil and in the subsoil of blue clay marls and sand and sandstone of the HELVETIEN containing the most complex of clays: Montmorillonite. It is one of the most beautiful terroirs of Vacqueyras. Note: the grapes here express 3 different terroirs. The grape varieties are Grenache (50%) – Syrah (50%). Aa MONTIRIUS A.O.C. GIGONDAS Red Our Gigondas extends over three plots representing 16 hectares of vines of which 8 hectares are very old vines planted in 1925 with a steam engine by Eric's paternal great-grandfather: Henri Saurel. A plot of 10 hectares rests on ancient alluvium from Mindel and blue clay marls from Pliocene laid on a base of sands and sandstones from the Helvetien. A plot of 3 hectares rests on limestones and Marnes of Barremien. A plot of 3 hectares rests on red clays from the Oligocene. Three plots of 1 hectare each located in the village of Sarrians. The age of the vines is 25 years. The vines rest on a soil of Garrigues and a subsoil of sands and sandstones of the Helvetien. A plot of 1 hectare 100% old vines of Grenache (55 years old) located on the village of Sablet. Sablet is an appellation Côtes du Rhône village. The soil is sandy clayey and the subsoil is composed of sand and yellow sandstone from the Helvetian. A plot of 1 ha of Côtes du Rhône located on the village of Sarrians near the plot "Le Clos". It is protected on two sides by forest. The 50-year-old vines are on sands and sandstones of the Helvetian. The micro climate in this place is cool. These are lands that were leased to Eric Saurel in 2007 by a retired neighbor who likes to see us work in Bio-Dynamie and he was happy that his vines are maintained in this way. a plot of 7 hectares located on the banks of the river called the Ouvèze. This plot is planted in Grenache, Syrah and Merlot. The soil is composed of sandy-silty alluvium from the Würm on the surface resting on the gravels of the Ouvèze. The river dries up in the summer stopping the supply of water to the roots of vines. Thus, there is cessation of vegetation and concentration of sugars in grape grains. a plot of 1.5 hectares rented to Eric Saurel in 2007 by a friend of our family in retirement. It is located on the village of Sarrians, district of the castle area. 100% Syrah. We immediately convert it to bio-dynamic principles. The soil consists of silty alluvium covering on a base of sand and sandstone of the Helvetian. From the first harvest, the grapes amaze us on this new plot by their freshness and this will be repeated every year regardless of the climatic conditions. 120518_montirius_dsc_2927 See less
