Created in 1769 by Joseph Leroy the maternal ancestor of Hugues Dubuisson the current manager, the Brasserie Dubuisson is the oldest brewery in Wallonia. Always located in the same place, 8 generations of brewers have succeeded each other in direct line to make it a brewery that remains today still 100% independent. The brewing origins of the family are even older, since before this date, Joseph Leroy and his family brewed on the seigneurial domain of Ghissegnies located just in front of the current brewery. To eliminate the unfair competition represented by the seigneurial breweries, hitherto exempt from taxes, the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, who reigned at the time over our regions, ordered their outright destruction in 1769. It was then that Joseph Leroy decided to settle on the current estate, non-seigneurial land, and at the same time gained his independence as a farmer-brewer. At that time, the brewing activity was much more limited than today and consisted mainly of producing beer for farm workers and villagers. It was not until much later, in 1931, that Alfred Dubuisson decided to abandon the farm's activity to devote himself exclusively to the production of beer. He then formed a partnership with his brother, Amédée Dubuisson, and together they bought their parents' brewery farm, which later became sprl Brasserie Dubuisson Frères. Between the foundation in 1769 and the year 1931, the Dubuisson brewery farm experienced many troubled periods and was notably occupied by Napoleon's troops at the beginning of the 19th century as well as by the Germans in 1914 and 1940. Each time, the Dubuisson family got up, rebuilt and relaunched the tool. See less
