Description

Welcome to Domaine Legrand The estate's only cuvée in white, Saumur À l'Écart, comes from a manual harvest in two sorts. Fermentation and ageing on fine lees are carried out without sulphite. Pale yellow in color, the nose of the 2018 vintage is intense with candied citrus fruits. The mouth enjoys a warm, fresh and balanced attack. The finish is intense on notes of dried fruits (pistachio, hazelnut).

This cuvée is to be appreciated from now on, and for another 5 years.

We would be delighted to welcome you!

The vineyard consists of 17 hectares of Cabernet Franc - a grape variety producing red wine of the Saumur-Champigny appellation - divided into about twenty plots spread over the communes of Saumur, Dampierre, Chacé, Varrains and Souzay-Champigny. The average age of the vines is 45 years, the oldest were planted in 1927. A small plot of Chenin produces Saumur Blanc (dry wine). In Saumurois, the vine grows on gently sloping grounds traditionally enclosed by walls of which there remain some picturesque vestiges. These tufa walls, which constitute a typicality of the local vineyard, ensure by their protection and their luminosity an optimal maturation of the grapes. The vines planted in the clay-limestone soils of the Cretaceous (the Middle Turonian, 90 million years ago) produce the best Saumur-Champigny. The vineyard and its terroir Work of the vine For more than 30 years, all of our plots have been grassed, for virtuous ecological protection. The cellar of the estate The Saumurois region is known for its limestone: the tufa. The first cellars, dug by man, more than a millennium ago, constitute a gigantic underground network. The extraction of tufa blocks has made it possible to discover many fossils, oysters and ammonites for example. By digging these galleries in the "tuffe", our ancestors killed two birds with one stone: - they exploited this noble material for the construction of buildings that still make the reputation of the banks of the Loire: castles, abbeys, churches, houses and enclosed by vineyards ... - they then used these galleries as shelters for themselves or for their livestock and as places of winemaking. These cellars have the advantage of offering ideal conditions for the storage of wine due to a high humidity rate and a temperature that is both fresh and constant (≈ 12 °C). As early as the 15th century, the galleries on the hillside served as troglodyte dwellings. At the end of the 19th century, some of them were converted into mushroom farms. See less
