Description

Since 1900, the motto of the distillery is "gwelloc'h bepred", meaning "nothing but excellence" in Breton. To live up to this motto, the distillery sets the bar very high when it comes to selecting the best ingredients and only the best suppliers are selected to meet our requirements. All our products are elaborated and aged at the distillery. Like all craft distilleries, we refuse any compromise on quality and our whiskies themselves are proof of this commitment to excellence.

July 1, 1900 Distillery founded by Léon Warenghem. At the end of the 19th century, the distillery was founded by the Warenghem family in Lannion, on the pink granite coast. Léon Warenghem, the founder, originally from the north of France, and his heirs, had their first success with the distillery through vegetable liqueurs. The Elixir d'Armorique, a blend of 35 plants, is the flagship product of the distillery, having received numerous distinctions at international trade fairs over the years, and continues to enjoy an international reputation, especially on the other side of the Atlantic. The elixir is still produced today at the distillery. 1919 Henri Warenghem succeeded his father and continued to work on liqueurs. Henri Warenghem continues the work of developing liqueurs, expanding the distillery's range of products with mint, blackcurrant and kirsch liqueurs. The Distillery makes a name for itself thanks to the network of wholesalers and wine merchants of the Great West. 1967 Paul-Henri Warenghem joins forces with Yves Leizour. The distillery is moved to the site of the natural spring of the Rest Avel. In 1967, Paul-Henri, the last generation of Warenghem, joined forces with Yves Leizour. They diversified the range of historical liqueurs and directed their development towards large-scale distribution in Brittany. In 1974, Paul-Henri Warenghem and Yves Leizour moved the distillery from the city center to the outskirts of Lannion, right next to the source of the Rest Avel which means "abode of the wind" in Breton. 1983 Gilles Leizour takes over the distillery and embarks on the distillation of whisky. In the early 80s, Gilles Leizour, a pharmacist by training, succeeded his father. Eager to revive the distillery, he decided to direct the company's activities towards regional products, creating the Chouchen Melmor. Always in search of improvements and stability for the distillery, and encouraged by Bernard Le Pallec, commercial director, Gilles Leizour decides to make a bold bet: launch the first 100% Breton - and French - whisky. 1987 Launch of the very first Breton whisky, the WB After many trials, WB Breton whisky, a blend composed of 25% malt whisky and 75% grain whisky, was successfully marketed in 1987. 1993 Construction of the 1st distillery in France dedicated solely to whisky In 1993, refining his know-how, Gilles Leizour commissioned the construction of a distillery exclusively dedicated to whisky, equipped with a pair of copper stills inspired by Scottish distilleries. 1998 Launch of Armorik – Single Malt Whisky Breton Armorik, the first single malt from Brittany and France, was officially launched in 1998. This single malt quickly became the driving force behind the distillery. 2013 Armorik Double Maturation voted "Best European Single Malt" Armorik Double Maturation was voted Best European Whisky at the World Whiskies Awards in 2013, then became a double gold medallist in 2014 at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The other editions of Armorik, Armorik Classic and Armorik Sherry, will also receive awards and strengthen the prestige of this single malt. This international recognition allows Armorik to export worldwide (Sweden, USA, Canada, Australia, Japan and Western Europe). 2015 David Roussier continues the family adventure. Creation of the geographical indication ''Whisky Breton'' Gilles Leizour retired in 2016 and David Roussier, his son-in-law, who joined the distillery in 2009, succeeded him at the head of the company, continuing the work in progress. The distillery participates in the creation of the geographical indication "Whisky Breton", helping to ensure that all "Whisky Breton" are properly crushed, fermented, distilled and aged in Brittany. 2019 Construction of an additional cellar and opening of a new Armorik reception area Major work is being carried out to build 2 new cellars, tripling the amount of whisky that can be kept for aging, as well as a new reception area, a projection room, an exhibition space and a tasting room. The Distillery is designated "Living Heritage Company". Awarded by the French State, this label rewards French companies achieving excellence in terms of craftsmanship and industrial know-how.
