Description

In the fourteenth century, during their stay in Avignon, the Popes, and especially John XXII, built the papal castle at Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Seduced by the exceptional terroir, they developed the vineyard on the hillsides surrounding the Château and greatly contributed to the influence of its wines in the world.

The Domaine de Beaurenard has been a family estate for 7 generations in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. A notarial deed of December 16, 1695, mentions "Bois Renard", which will become over the years "Beaurenard".

The COULON brothers, Daniel and Frédéric succeeded Paul and Régine, and are committed to perpetuating the Tradition. The Estate extends over 32 hectares of vineyards in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and 25 hectares in Rasteau, cru of the Rhone Valley, and 6 hectares in Côtes-du-Rhône.
We would be delighted to welcome you to make you discover the estate and its history and the work done to develop our wine!

Looking forward to seeing you again

A terroir blessed by the gods Rolled pebbles, 13 grape varieties, sun and mistral have been the fundamentals of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation for centuries. The terroir in Châteauneuf-du-Pape is unique: its large pebbles, heated by the sun, providentially diffuse in the soil a soft heat, thus promoting the maturity and concentration of the grapes. The Domaine has the "Symphony of 13 grape varieties" characteristic of the appellation, bringing aromatic complexity, power and balance. For red wines, 4 dominant grape varieties: Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, complemented by Counoise, Muscardin, Terret noir and Vaccarèse. The whites are made from white grape varieties: Clairette, Roussane, Bourboulenc, Grenache blanc, Picardan and Picpoul. Discover in music the "Symphony of the 13 grape varieties" The average age of the vines is about 45 years with a yield, in Châteauneuf, varying from 15 to 35 hl/ha. In Rasteau, the terroir is clay-limestone with a subsoil of blue clays, in hillsides and terraces facing south. Yields are low (25 to 38 hl/Ha). Vineyard balanced in organic, and even more ... with a biodynamic culture The entire Beaurenard Vineyard (60ha) is grown organically (certified by Ecocert) and even grown in biodynamics (certified by Demeter), without the use of synthetic chemicals. Thus the vine is in tune with nature, lunar and planetary cycles and cosmic rhythms. With this principle we apply biodynamic preparations at key moments (horn dung, dung compost, silica,...) that will strengthen the natural defenses of the vine. To complete this strength, sprays of herbal teas are carried out regularly (nettle, yarrow horsetail, chamomile,...). In the vineyard, this results in herbicide-free tillage, with carefully energized manure spreading and reflected grassing (depending on climatic conditions) The establishment of a conservatory with the 13 authorized grape varieties of the appellation from the oldest vines of the Domaine de Beaurenard also contributes to biodiversity. The grape varieties selected for 5 years were grafted on site in old-standing slit, in a plot in rest of the ground for 12 years. Our primary goal is to safeguard this natural genetic heritage, which is particularly well adapted to the terroir. The idea is also to think about future generations, and if global warming continues, to increase the percentage of these grape varieties with fewer sugars (therefore less alcohol) and bringing aromatic complexity. The work remains manual Constant manual work is carried out throughout the year, with 4 highlights: The pruning carried out only by the staff of the Domaine de Beaurenard where everyone takes care of the same plot year after year and thus shapes "his cep" like a sculpture. The manual disensure of all the vines, in order to avoid the crowding of leaves around the bunches, to ensure a small yield and to ventilate the stump by introducing inside the cup a natural source of light! To this work is added the work in green: lifting, tying, harvesting in green if necessary. The tillage and the controlled grassing are completed by a team of seasonal workers who "pass the picole" in the vineyards for long weeks, very trying and tedious work in our stony soils. The harvest entirely manual and sorted. This type of cultivation and monitoring of extreme precision makes it possible to obtain healthy grapes, which are the only ones capable of producing quality wines of great concentration. See less
