User profile description

Maverick Wines Pty Ltd. was established in 2004. The goal was and is to be one of the best luxury wineries in Australia. Although the company is young, Maverick owns 75 acres of vineyards from the best terroirs of the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley. About half of the vines are over 100 years old, and many are much older - our Ahrens' Creek vineyard in Vine Vale has an 1840s sedamp, an 1840s grenache and a 1870 shiraz, while in our adjacent Barossa Ridge vineyard we have Riesling from the 1860s! For many years, the fruits of these vineyards have entered some of the biggest names in the Australian wine industry - they are now proudly incorporated into our Maverick wines. Just as important as the acquisition of leading terroirs is to maintain them in close harmony with Mother Nature. Our vineyards are biodynamic - our Trial Hill and Barossa Ridge vineyards are certified biodynamic and organic by NASAA (Australia's National Association of Sustainable Agriculture). Our winery in Vine Vale is certified biodynamic. The combination of biodynamic viticulture, old vines (the average age of the vineyard is about 100 years) and efficient dry agriculture results in very low yields which in turn give a pure and intense fruit that is fundamental to the production of high-end wines. At Maverick, we all consider ourselves the temporal guardians of our magnificent vineyards, which we cultivate in the most environmentally friendly way possible. The absence of chemicals in the wine, combined with our minimal water regime, encourages the development of the growth of the roots of the vines - even our 100-year-old vines have consequently reached one or two centimetres more, allowing them access to a new cave of Aladdin nutrients and improving the absorption of nitrogen, water and microbes by the vines , as well as a healthier and stronger vine. Maverick makes his own 500 biodynamic horns from lactating cow manure - each year we insert it into more than 100 cow horns and bury them deep in the vineyard where they stay during the winter months. The resulting material is then energized in our 1000-litre copper biodynamir imported specially from Italy, and sprayed on our selection of micro-terroirs across the Eden Valley and the Barossa Valley. We also make our own organic compost, which replaces organic matter lost in the annual wine cycle in the vineyards. This is complemented by a cover crop in all our vineyards, which further opens the soil, encourages the life of birds, insects and plants in the ecosystem above before bud break-up, and is then cut and mulched in the soil to promote the development of nitrogen.
