Description

The Understory is a subscription community for Friends of the Farm. There are three levels of involvement in the farm depending on the areas of emergence of forest life; the underlay, the canopy and the emergent layer.
We started farming to discover the roots of food in agrarian life. We explore how changes in the way we grow soil, grow plants and raise animals affect the taste of food, the kitchen is built and communities come together to support the growth system. We invite you to be part of this journey.
As a Friend of the Farm, you can engage in life in three ways.
Support our field investigation: Your financial support allows us to pursue projects that would otherwise be impossible for a small farm to undertake. You will be informed and involved as we trace new paths for the relationship between food, wine, agriculture and community.
Make a place for our wines at home: Each year, we make more than fifty different wines, from more than a hundred grape varieties, each grown on a separate plot within the remarkable eco-diversity of the Columbia Gorges. Each month, we will offer friends of the farm a selection of bottles that will offer an experience of our world through the prism of wine.
We would be delighted to welcome you to make you discover the estate and its history and the work done to develop our wines!

Looking forward to seeing you again

Hiyu Wine Farm Hiyu is a 30-acre farm in the Hood River Valley. The vines are planted in a loamy loam on basalt on a southeast slope above the Hood River. Our site is just 22 miles from the top of the mountain. Hood and the wines are shaped by the mountain weather. The place is the closest by the climate to the wine regions of the Alps; Savoy, Valais and the Aosta Valley. The property is composed of 14 hectares of vineyards, 4 hectares of fields and pastures, 0.5 hectares of market garden, 4 hectares of forest and a pond. The rest of the area is on land that is moved to food forests. Apart from a small work under the vines with a scythe, there is no mowery or plowing and no vegetation control is carried out by pigs, cows, chickens, ducks and geese that live with the vines at different times of the year. We direct plant diversity on site by sowing directly into dense vegetation or behind pigs when they take root in search of food. We make a single cut of the vines by pruning, but there is no hedge, harvesting in green, uprooting leaves or other interruption of the vegetative cycle of the vine. We spray 85% less material than a typical organic or biodynamic vineyard. There is no sulfur used. The main control of mold is with cinnamon oil and the other sprays are mixed herbal teas. Plantations have as much biodiversity as undergrowth. The property is divided into half-acre blocks, each planted with a field mixture of a different time in the genetic history of the vine. There are more than 80 different varieties of grapes and many other clonal selections planted on the farm. See less
