The Abruzzo region is naturally predisposed to viticulture; Protected by four parks (three national and one regional) and by a dozen nature reserves and protected areas, it extends over fifty kilometers of the Massifs of Gran Sasso d'Italia & Majella and the Adriatic Sea, where preserved environments such as hills, plateaus and lush plains, which guarantee the vine and olive tree an ideal microclimate to vegetate and produce an extraordinary quality. The wine production of Abruzzo has a very ancient history, in fact since the Roman Empire the vine was cultivated in large areas of the region, but the first cultivation of the vine is due to the Phoenicians and Greeks, who colonized the territory before the Romans . The Greek Polybius indeed extolled the therapeutic virtues of wine to bandage the wounds of some soldiers and to invigorate the forces of the combatants. The poet Ovid, originally from Abruzzo ante litteram, celebrated the wine of this region in several of his works, as well as Martial, who lived a century later, who in his epigrams testified how the wines of Abruzzo raised the tables of the Roman nobles. The cultivation of the vine has profoundly marked the history, traditions and work of Abruzzo since antiquity and has been consolidated over the centuries. Over the past 40-50 years, Abruzzo viticulture has gradually abandoned the most difficult areas and redistributed itself into the most appropriate areas of the coastal hills, mainly located in the province of Teatina. The most widespread form of agriculture in Abruzzo is the Abruzzo pergola which accounts for more than 80% of the regional vineyard. Montepulciano is one of the most widespread grape varieties and represents more than half of the regional ampelographic base, in addition to being the reference grape variety of the DOC Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, which also includes the Cerasuolo type. there is some information about its presence in Abruzzo since the mid-1700s. Then comes the white grape variety Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, which gives birth to the DOC of the same name, another protagonist in the history of Abruzzo wine.
